Lynne Denig

Lynne Denig was Paul Rolland’s last graduate assistant to receive a degree with him at the University of Illinois.  Part of her study of Rolland Pedagogy took place in Mr. Rolland’s year-long pedagogy course as part of her Masters Degree in Violin Performance and Pedagogy at the U of I.  She also attended the last summer workshop that Mr. Rolland offered in Champaign-Urbana in 1978.  After his death, Lynne also attended the last Rolland Workshop in Quebec, Canada, offered by Mrs. Rolland and her son, Michael.

Since that time, Lynne has taught and directed the annual Rolland Pedagogy Workshop in Fairfax, Virginia, USA (www.PotomacAcademy.org under Summer Programs).  Internationally, Lynne has been one of the principle Rolland speakers at the London Seminar for String Teachers directed by Claudio Forcada (www.claudioforcada.com), and also in Hamburg, Germany, at the Rolland Seminar there.

In the United States, Lynne regularly makes Rolland presentations at the American String Teachers Association Conference and also writes articles for them on Rolland Pedagogy and chinrest fitting.  She has also served as the Rolland Pedagogy specialist at Peter Rolland’s Fiddle Camp (www.PeterRolland.com) in Westcliffe, Colorado.

Together with colleague Gary Frisch and with knowledge of Rolland Pedagogy, Lynne created a patented chinrest fitting system that provides pain relief and enhanced technique in violinists and violists (www.chinrests.com).

As a leader in string teaching, Lynne has not only been one of the leaders of Rolland Pedagogy, but she has also served her nation and area in creating with others the Certificate Advancement Program (www.astaweb.com), many of the Virginia String Teachers Association’s programs, and in serving as VASTA’s president.  Lynne also created the violin portion of the Music Advancement Program for previously marginalized youths in Durban, South Africa

As a past university professor at Northern Michigan University, Lynne also likes to recognize her primary university professors: at West Virginia University (BM), Donald Portnoy, violin and Gerald Lefkoff, viola; at the University of Illinois (MM), Paul Rolland, violin, and Guillermo Perich, viola; and at the University of Iowa (DMA, ABD), Leopold LaFosse, violin.  Suzuki Pedagogy was studied with Joellyn Keranen and Ronda Cole.

Currently, Lynne teaches twenty violin and viola students in Fairfax, Virginia ages 10-18.  Awards include: Outstanding and Distinguished Service Award, VASTA; and Citation for Leadership and Merit, ASTA.

Estudió Pedagogía Suzuki con Joellyn Keranen and Ronda Cole.
